Abkhazia mourns the death of 'Maradona', a local celebrity madman
Abkhazia, and especially Sukhum, is shocked by the news of the death of a local madman, a homeless individual with a gray beard, who had become a local celebrity. Shamil Galin, loved by everyone and known locally as Maradona, was found drowned in a fountain, presumably drunk.
Both officials and ordinary citizens of Sukhum are keen on the idea of staging a funeral ceremony.
Arkhip Labakhua, one of the best known Abkhazian sculptors, already started drawing up a monument in honor of Maradona, which might be constructed on the embankment.
