Wildberries is building warehouses in Astana and Almaty with a combined area of more than 260,000 square meters, Kazakhstan’s Minister of Trade and Integration, Arman Shakkaliyev, said.

The company also already leases about 46,000 square meters of warehouse space in Kazakhstan.

Shakkaliyev said the ministry had received no formal request from Wildberries regarding the opening of new warehouses in Kazakhstan. He added that companies can negotiate directly with warehouse owners without government involvement.

According to the newspaper’s sources, the company was prepared to take virtually all available warehouse space in Kazakhstan, where supply is generally limited. The move would allow the online retailer to shield part of its logistics capacity from drone strikes.

According to Kommersant, Wildberries is also continuing to search for new warehouse space in Russia. But owners of vacant facilities are currently reluctant to sign new leases with the company because of the risk of drone attacks.
