Should a woman be modest? Poll on belly dancing in Tskhinval
Some time ago, social media users in North and South Ossetia have been vehemently discussing the case of belly dancing on the streets in Vladikavkaz.
A girl was dancing to promote a new beauty salon. It sparked a new round of an age-old discussion regarding what is considered proper for women in patriarchal societies.
The majority of social media users believe the girl should be ashamed of her immodest behavior. ‘The fact that none of the men passing by had covered her with their jacket, was seen as a sign of moral degradation.’
JAMnews polled the people in South Ossetia asking them: “Should a woman be modest and how should it be manifested?” We have collected numerous opinions, but present the most typical ones – most believe that patriarchal traditions are a must.
