Georgia joins joint statement in support of Ukraine at UN
51 UN member states, including Georgia, have signed a joint statement in support of Ukraine, calling on Russia to agree to a full ceasefire and begin peace talks. EU High Representative Kaja Kallas read out the statement in New York during the 81st session of the UN General Assembly.
According to Ukrainian media, the United States did not join the statement.
The signatories expressed solidarity with Ukraine and reaffirmed their support for Kyiv’s efforts to achieve peace amid the ongoing war with Russia.
“Ukraine wants peace. We want peace. Russia must end its aggression, agree to a ceasefire and engage meaningfully in negotiations to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in accordance with international law,” the statement said.
The countries also called for freedom of navigation and commercial shipping in the Black Sea, the protection of critical infrastructure and the unimpeded export of Ukrainian grain. They said these measures were important for maintaining global food security.
The signatories also urged Russia to immediately return all Ukrainian civilians who had been unlawfully detained, forcibly transferred or deported, including children. The call also covered prisoners of war and internees.
Georgia’s Foreign Minister Maka Bochorishvili also took part in events on Ukraine held in New York. She attended the sixth summit of the International Crimea Platform, titled “Unity under pressure, a call to action”, which took place on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
Bochorishvili said Ukraine was particularly important to Georgia because the country itself was experiencing the consequences of violations of its territorial integrity.
“For Georgia, Ukraine is not just another item on the international agenda. We know very well what it means when a state’s sovereignty and territorial integrity are violated,” the minister said.
According to Bochorishvili, Russia’s occupation of two regions of Georgia continues and remains one of the country’s main security challenges.
“We know very well how devastating occupation can be for individuals, families and society. Based on this experience, Georgia attaches particular importance to solidarity, respect for international law and an unwavering commitment to the principles on which a peaceful and secure international order should be built,” Bochorishvili said.
She also discussed the role of the International Crimea Platform, describing it as an important mechanism for keeping international attention focused on Ukraine and turning political support into concrete action.
Bochorishvili said Georgia supported efforts to end the war and achieve a lasting peace based on the UN Charter and the principles of international law.
“Georgia stands firmly with the Ukrainian people and once again reaffirms its unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders,” she said.
The Crimea Platform is a high-level international forum held annually to provide political support for Ukraine.
