The Armenian President, Serzh Sargsyan, re-iterated Armenia’s support for the Russian family model amidst active ongoing discussions in Armenia on the need for the adoption of the law on prevention of domestic violence.
“We support the statement on support of a family and traditional family values, as proposed by the Russian side … Family is the foundation of society and a cohesive factor for nations.” the Armenian President stated at the meeting of the CIS Council of the Heads of States on 11 October.
However, President Sargsyan didn’t explain further what the ‘Russian family model’ implied. He also did not comment on whether or not he supported the law on decriminalization of domestic violence which was recently adopted in Russia.
Meanwhile, Facebook users described in detail their idea of a Russian family.
Here are some typical comments:
“What’s the Russian family model? Is it a model of alcoholics and those who commonly send their children to orphanages?”
“I can’t understand why Sargsyan speaks and decides for everyone.”
“What kind of families do they have that we should pattern ourselves on them? Our Armenian families are the best in the world.”
A new bill on ‘the Prevention of Domestic Violence’ has been brought up for public discussion in Armenia. The majority of experts regard this initiative as extremely important and compliant with European values.
In the first six months of 2017, 215 cases involving domestic violence were reported in Armenia.
