UNHRC resolution on Georgia’s occupied territories
On 7 October, the UN Human Rights Council adopted a resolution in Geneva concerning Georgia‘s occupied regions.
According to Georgia’s Foreign Ministry, the resolution, entitled “Cooperation with Georgia”, addresses the human rights situation in Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region (South Ossetia).
The UN Human Rights Council calls for unhindered access to the occupied territories for the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, as well as international and regional human rights mechanisms.
The resolution also condemns Russia’s actions aimed at annexing Abkhazia and the Tskhinvali region, and reaffirms support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognised borders.
It expresses concern over discrimination and human rights violations against ethnic Georgians in the Russian-occupied regions.
The document also highlights the importance of the Geneva International Discussions, established under the ceasefire agreement of 12 August 2008.
The resolution, submitted by Georgia, was adopted by consensus, as it was last year.
