Armenian Ministry of Health warns against swimming in parts of Lake Sevan
The Ministry of Health of Armenia has warned vacationers to take caution and carefully choose swimming locations in Lake Sevan – and to avoid areas with green water.
The water in Lake Sevan has changed color due to the accumulation of blue-green algae called cyanobacter. These algae can be hazardous to human and animal health.
A video appeared on social media displaying the unappetizing green colour of Lake Sevan.
Environment Minister Eric Grigoryan said that the water in Sevan has ‘bloomed’ because of an imbalance in the ecosystem, but thanks to special clean-up work, the dangerous algae in the lake has already receded considerably.
