For a long time, Abkhazia was known mainly for its basic range of wines. The region’s unpredictable climate, with annual rainfall of up to 2,000 mm, was seen as a challenge, as was the popularity of mass-produced semi-sweet wines.
However, modern winemaking practices have challenged this perception. Today, Abkhaz wine producers are shifting their focus towards premium wines.
The Association of Winemakers is actively reviving local indigenous grape varieties. It says fermentation control and modern scientific methods now make it possible to produce delicate, dry and fresh rosé wines.
