Artur Sargsyan, who delivered food to the group that seized Patrol Police regiment in Yerevan, released

Artur Sargsyan, who on July 17, 2016, delivered food to the Sansa Tsrer group that seized Patrol Police regiment in Yerevan, has been released from Hospital for Convicts penitentiary institution and taken to Armenia medical center.

On July 17, the Armenian patrol police regiment was seized by the armed group that demanded release of Jirair Sefilian, an oppositionist, who had been arrested 1 month before the incident. Sefilian, a founder of the Founding Parliament movement, was arrested for illegal procurement, transportation and storage of firearms and ammunition. The rebels demanded release of Safilian and resignation of the Armenian President, Serzh Sargsyan’s resignation.

On July 26, at about 7 a.m., Artur Sargsyan drove his car through a police cordon to deliver food to the group members. Artur Sargsyan, who was referred to in mass media as ‘Ats Berokh’ (bread bringer), was accused of penetration into the patrol police regiment area, seizure and retention of the given regiment and the adjacent area.

The armed group surrendered on July 31.

27 members of the Armenian National Assembly filed a petition with the General Prosecutor’s Office, requesting to substitute the arrest restraining order with personal surety. Among the petitioners were   the MP from the Prosperous Armenia faction, Armenian National Congress, Orinats Yerkir (Country of Law), the Armenian Revolutionary Federation ‘ Dashnaktsutyun’, the Heritage party, as well as non-faction MPs.

On March 6, Armenian General Prosecutor met 6 MPs and familiarized them with the charges brought against Sargsyan. He also introduced them a procedure of application of the personal surety restraint measure, as well as their responsibilities.

Тhe MPs were given an opportunity to visit Sargsyan in Hospital for Convicts penitentiary institution and afterwards either to confirm their application or disclaim it.

As ‘А1 plus’ reported, not only did the aforesaid MPs confirm their personal surety, but they also posted AMD500,000 bail each.

The General Prosecutor made a decision on substitution of the arrest restraining order with personal surety for Artur Sargsyan. After the decision entered into force, Sargyan was released from Hospital for Convicts and taken to Armenia medical center.

According to Tigran Yegoryan, a lawyer, Artur Sargsyan’s condition is said to critical.

Until February 9, Artur Sargsyan had been released on his own recognizance. However, on February 9, the court decided to replace the measure of restraint and arrest him for 2 months, referring to violation of Article 131 of the Criminal Code of Armenia by the accused (breach of conditions of the written undertaking not to leave the place). Afterwards, Artur Sargsyan went on a hunger strike, which lasted for 23 days and seriously affected his health.
