South Ossetia’s TV marks its anniversary – 22 years since its foundation. The TV channel first started broadcasting in March 1994.

JAMnews has talked with the local TV channel’s most high-rated program anchor, Tamerlan Dzutsev, about how it was and what it has turned into

JAMnews: Do you remember, how it all began in 1994?

– I was not in the republic then. I was in Moscow. But I certainly know, what effect it produced. Our own TV! For many people it was probably the most weighty proof that we were transforming into an independent state. Everybody watched it.

JAMnews: Was the broadcast in Ossetian language?

– Yes, but there were also programs in Russian.

JAMnews: Where did you get the footages?

– Everything was done based on pure enthusiasm. Alan Dzhioev and Valery Khubulov managed to get the equipment somewhere. TV spots were produced at home, using whatever was available. It was so for two years, until the television was independent. Then it became the state TV.

JAMnews: What does the South Ossetian state TV content look like now?

– Our own broadcast starts at 3 p.m.. Before that, we are using the Russian content, mainly films. But if there is any news related to South Ossetia on the Russian federal TV channels, it’s certainly a different story.

JAMnews: Do the authorities manifest any particular interest in TV?

– I host live air programs, where country’s top officials appear. I anchor Sunday night program ‘Viva Voce On’, where floor is given to public officials, as well as debates in the run-up to parliamentary and presidential elections. Naturally, the interest could be felt.

JAMnews: What about pressure?

– No particular pressure.

JAMnews: In other words, is there freedom of creativity?

– Creativity is encouraged. However, the political line is to be maintained, we are the state-run TV, aren’t we. Though South Ossetia’s President, Leonid Tibilov claims, criticism is highly welcomed.

JAMnews: Is Georgian TV available on the territory of the republic?

– Yes, especially in the border areas. Sometimes I also watch them, as far as my Georgian permits.

JAMnews: So, what’s your impression?

– They certainly outclass us in terms of picture and technical capacities.
