329 people died on the roads of Georgia last year

The Ministry of the Interior reported that 3,071 road accidents were recorded in 2018 in Georgia, which resulted in 329 deaths.

This is two per cent more than the previous year.

The number of car accidents in Georgia is alarming, and the number is increasing from year to year.

In 2017, a total of 2,626 accidents were recorded, which claimed 322 lives.

Georgia occupies one of the leading places in Europe in terms of road traffic mortality rates. To improve the situation, experts are demanding the adoption of stricter regulations.

The most common factors leading to accidents are:

• speeding;

• moving a vehicle from one lane to another without using turn signals, moving across a solid line or overtaking in a prohibited place;

• drunk driving;

• violation of safety rules by pedestrians;

• technical failure of a vehicle;

       • bad road infrastructure.

A report by the Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that 21 children died (aged 16 and under) in accidents last year.

Special car seats for children in the cabins of cars are not mandatory in Georgia. This, experts say, increases the percentage of infant mortality in car accidents.
