Former pro-Russian Moldovan president Igor Dodon has arrived in the Georgian capital together with a delegation of opposition MPs. The visit, officially framed as an effort to deepen “parliamentary cooperation”, has already drawn political reactions and criticism.
Dodon said he is in Tbilisi on a working visit as a member of the Moldova–Georgia parliamentary friendship group. According to him, the trip is taking place at the invitation of the Georgian side and aims to strengthen ties between the two countries, particularly at the legislative level.
The delegation is led by Bogdan Tsyrdya, an MP from Moldova’s Socialist Party and co-chair of the friendship group. It also includes representatives from various opposition factions, giving the visit a cross-party format.
The visit includes the first official meeting of the Moldova–Georgia friendship group, as well as consultations with the speaker of the Georgian parliament and representatives of various political groups. Dodon said the focus is on deepening cooperation and exploring new opportunities.
Moldovan NGO WatchDog.MD, one of the country’s leading organisations in countering disinformation and corruption, has published part of the visit’s programme and noted that some members of the delegation are known for their pro-Russian positions.
Igor Dodon, who served as Moldova’s president from 2016 to 2020, is often associated with Moscow and a pro-Russian political line. Before arriving in Tbilisi, he had been in Russia.
Georgian authorities have not yet issued any official comment on the visit by Dodon and his delegation.
