Amy V. Diaz appointed Chargé d'Affaires at US Embassy in Georgia

The US Embassy has announced that Amy V. Diaz has been appointed Chargé d’Affaires ad interim in Georgia. The announcement was published on the embassy’s official website.

According to the embassy, Diaz is a senior career member of the US Foreign Service and has served in the role since July 2026.

Who is Amy V. Diaz?

Amy V. Diaz has held a range of diplomatic and leadership positions throughout her career. Before her current appointment, she served as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim and Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Lilongwe, Malawi.

Earlier, she worked at the US State Department’s Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, where she was Deputy Director of the Office of Policy and Global Issues.

Diaz also headed the consular section at the US Embassy in Harare, Zimbabwe, and led the counternarcotics team at the US Embassy in Afghanistan.

Her previous assignments also include serving as rule of law adviser and coordinator for the Summit of the Americas at the US Embassy in Panama, chief of the internal political unit at the US Embassy in Tbilisi, and vice consul at US diplomatic missions in Harare and Monterrey, Mexico.

Diaz joined the US State Department in 2002 through the Presidential Management Fellows programme and has been a career member of the US Foreign Service since 2005.

She holds a bachelor’s degree from St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland, and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Arizona. According to the State Department, she has received multiple Superior Honor Awards and Meritorious Honor Awards in recognition of her distinguished service.

The post of US ambassador to Georgia has remained vacant since July 2025, when Robin Dunnigan stepped down. Since then, the embassy has been headed by a series of Chargés d’Affaires ad interim. Alan Purcell initially led the mission, before Amy W. Diaz was appointed US Chargé d’Affaires ad interim to Georgia in July 2026. Washington has yet to nominate a new ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the country.
