Until recently, only vehicles with local registration numbers were fined for traffic violations in Armenia. However, this has now changed as vehicles with registration numbers from foreign countries will also receive fines in Armenia.
The press frequently wrote that vehicles such as those with Russian number plates were getting away with not paying fines as there was no way of collecting them.
As a result, many local drivers began to purchase license plates from other countries, mostly from Russia and Georgia in order to avoid being fined.
The head of Armenia’s traffic police, Yegor Karapetyan stated that drivers will have to pay fines directly at the customs office upon exiting or re-entering Armenia. If the fines are not paid, the perpetrator will not receive an entry-visa to Armenia in future. Traffic police intend to notify all drivers of its new policy by the end of the year.
