Tbilisi residents have gathered in Bershueti village, Gori district, to protest against Russia’s occupation of Georgia. Two protest rallies are expected to be held at the Administrative Boundary Line (ABL) during the day. The protests are organized by ordinary citizens, who have come to the rally venue holding Georgian and EU flags.
The U.S. Ambassador to Georgia, Ian Kelly, has also travelled to the Administrative Boundary Line. According to the U.S. Ambassador, such border adjustment is an unnatural and artificial act that splits the nation into two.
“When a country’s territorial integrity is grossly violated by a neighboring country, the USA will naturally condemn and speak out against such an illegal action. Any unilateral modification of the internationally recognized borders is unacceptable, since it greatly affects the families, and the nation, in general. As for the solution to this problem, it’s a pragmatic approach that the Georgian side has, more progress at Geneva security talks and more discussions on this issue,” the U.S. Ambassador noted, adding that the border adjustment process wouldn’t last long.
He reiterated the U.S. government’s support for Georgia’s territorial integrity, saying the USA would never recognize Russia’s established borders, as in the case of the Baltic States.
One more protest rally is planned to be held at the occupation line at the end of the day. The citizens are expected to make a human chain in a token of protest against Russian occupation.
