Today, 9 April, the presidential elections and referendum on the renaming of the republic to the “State of South Ossetia-Alania” are simultaneously held in South Ossetia.
Social networks are full of discussions. Currently the following official data is available:
More than a third of the population had voted by 3 pm, which means the elections had been held.
Representatives of the CEC reported that preliminary results will be known by 12 o’clock at night.
The turmoil and amount of people in the polling stations of South Ossetia gives the impression of a protest rally. Yet that’s not the case.

There are three candidates for the presidency of South Ossetia:
- The incumbent president, Leonid Tibilov
- Chairman of the Parliament Anatoly Bibilov
- A local KGB officer Alan Gagloev
