European Parliament calls on Azerbaijani authorities to immediately free Afgan Mukhtarli
On 15 June, the European Parliament considered, among other issues, the case of Afgan Mukhtarli, the Azerbaijani journalist, who is staying in custody in Baku, and passed a resolution.
The Brussels-based European Parliament called on Azerbaijani authorities ‘to immediately release and drop all charges against Afgan Mukhtarli, the investigative journalist’.
As is also pointed out in the European Parliament’s resolution, Azerbaijani authorities ‘should end the selective criminal prosecution and imprisonment of journalists and human rights defenders, immediately release all political prisoners, and ensure compliance with fair trial norms’.
