By a decision of the Gazakh District Court in Azerbaijan, civil activist Nijat Amiraslanov was sentenced to 15 days of administrative arrest under Article 510 of the Code of Administrative Offences (petty hooliganism).
According to the activist’s relatives, who spoke to JAMnews, the incident occurred because he was distributing leaflets related to Elgun Ibrahimov.
Elgun Ibrahimov was a 17-year-old school student who died under mysterious circumstances. He was found in critical condition in an abandoned dormitory in Ganja and later died in hospital. Pro-government media circulated the version that he had taken his own life. However, his family insists he did not commit suicide but was beaten to death.
For some time now, various accusations have been voiced on social media that the prosecutor’s office is not conducting a proper investigation into the case. In addition, a number of activists have been distributing leaflets with information about the incident, posting them in different places and handing them out in the streets. Among the widely circulated theories is the claim that the murder was committed by police officers.

According to his relatives, Amiraslanov was detained today in Gazakh by police officers:
“He was putting up leaflets on the streets related to Elgun. We believe this is what led to his detention.”
Law enforcement authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the detention of the civil activist.
Nijat Amiraslanov has been known as a civil activist for many years. He has also worked as an independent journalist. In recent years, he has been repeatedly detained by the police and subjected to various administrative penalties. During previous detentions, there were claims that he had been tortured.
