People’s Defender of Georgia responded to large-scale pro-EU rally
Georgian Public Defender Nino Lomjaria commented on the June 20 rally by saying that Georgian society is much more progressive and European than the country’s political elite.
According to the Ombudsman, the results of the study show that 80%-90% of the population want Europe.
According to the Public Defender, the ruling party’s propaganda and moves, which were constantly aimed at stereotypical Georgians with a post-Soviet mentality, simply won’t work:
“People are not tired of the struggle for values, there is no tangible alienation between generations or political views. They are simply tired of most of the existing opposition political spectrum, and this is the weakness of Georgian democracy, along with authoritarian rule”.
On June 20, an unprecedented large-scale rally was held in front of the parliament building in Tbilisi in support of the European course of Georgia.
Thousands of people gathered at the rally to demonstrate the loyalty of the Georgian people to Europe and European values.
This action precedes an important decision for Georgia, which the European Union should take on June 24. On this day, it will be decided whether Georgia will receive the status of a candidate for EU membership.
Journalists and citizens who have been attending and covering rallies in Tbilisi for years note that they have never seen so many people on Rustaveli Avenue. At least 120,000 people attended the rally, according to the independent website Netgazeti. The maximum estimate is 160,000 people.
