On 11 December a group of female believers protested in front of the American Embassy in Baku against the US President’s recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.
The protest was organized by The Women’s Council of the Islamic Party of Azerbaijan and the Public Association of Soldiers’ Mothers.
The website islaminsesi.az reported that about 20 women took part in the protest which lasted about 20 minutes.
Protesters held up posters with slogans such as ‘Stop Terrorism’ and ‘Karabakh and Jerusalem are Muslim Lands’.
They condemned Trump’s actions and expressed solidarity with the people of Palestine.
Police did not interfere in the protest nor did any embassy staff members approach the protesters.
Hikmet Hajiyev, the Head of the Press Office of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, announced Baku’s official position on the recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Israel several days ago. According to him, Azerbaijan supports the solution of the issue on the foundation of two states with the capital of Palestine in East Jerusalem.
Azerbaijan recognizes the people of Palestine’s right to create an independent state. Embassies of both Israel and Palestine operate in Baku.
