Members of Georgia’s United National Movement, who continue to support its founder and long-time leader Mikheil Saakashvili after a recent conflict that has left the party fragmented, convened in Tbilisi’s Sports palace on Friday.
They elected the UNM’s 61-member political council. Nika Melia was named chairman of the council. Zaza Bibilashvili and Levan Varshalomidze will be his deputies.
Ex president Saakashvili skyped in to address the convention. “The UNM is the only party to have handed over power peacefully,” he said.
