Natik Jafarli freed

Nasimi District Court made an unexpected decision this evening to release Natik Jafarli, an executive secretary of the ReAl party.

Natik Jafarli was arrested on August 12 on the charges of illegal entrepreneurship and abuse of official powers. The court ruled to put him in a 4-month custody as a pre-trial restraint measure.

Natik Jafarli is known as an expert-economist, who is very active on social media. His analytical essays have made him ‘a favorite commentator’ for the independent media.

Natik Jafarli spent 29 days in prison. He admits that his release surprised him as much as his arrest. “I thought, I would spend a couple of years in prison, I was ready for that. Laughing, he tells that his main achievement over that period was the release of a few butterflies that accidentally flew into his cell.

As Jafarli told journalists, investigation into his case continues, but he is going to achieve complete dismissal of charges against him and, for this purpose, he stands ready to appeal to the European Court, if necessary.
