Armenia has hosted the FIFA World Cup trophy for the first time.
The FIFA World Cup trophy is a 6.2 kg gold cup that is shown to football fans in different countries across the globe. This year the World Cup Trophy is expected to tour around 50 countries, of which 24 will host it for the first time.
Christian Karembeu, who formerly played for Real Madrid and won the 1998 FIFA World Cup as part of France’s national team brought the trophy to Armenia.
“Twenty years ago I won this cup along with my fellow teammates from France’s national squad. I think you all know that there were two players of Armenian origin in that team – Youri Djorkaeff and Alain Boghossian. I’m very proud to present this cup to you,” said Karembeu.
The trophy presentation ceremony was held at Freedom Square in Yerevan and lasted for an hour. Football fans finally had a chance to see one of the most coveted football awards in the world. No one was allowed to touch it because only FIFA World Cup champions and the heads of state enjoy this right.
