Baku to host UEFA Europa League Final next year
Baku has been appointed as the venue for the second major European football club competition, the 2019 UEFA Europa League final. The decision was made at the meeting of the Executive Committee of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA), in the Swiss city of Nyon on 20 September.
The final match is scheduled for 29 May 2019 at the Baku-based Olympic Stadium which has a seating capacity of 69 870 people.
Baku also placed a bid for hosting the 2019 Champions League final. However, the UEFA Executive Committee selected Atletico Madrid’s new stadium, ‘Wanda Metropolitano’. The 2019 UEFA Super Cup will be played at the ‘Vodafone Arena’ stadium in Istanbul.
Baku was selected as the best option among the 14 accepted applications received from 10 national associations.
A year after the Europa League final, in 2020, Baku will host four matches as part of the UEFA Euro 2020.
