Azerbaijani political emigrants in Germany hold protest in solidarity with political prisoners

Members of Choose Democratic Azerbaijan, created by Azerbaijani political émigrés, held three demonstrations in support of Azerbaijani political prisoners in the German city of Essen.

These demonstrations were held before the editorial offices of three German media – Neue Rhein Zeitung, Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung and Unsere Zeit, Turan writes.

These demonstrations are part of the “German Journalists in Support of Political Prisoners” campaign launched by the organization. 

The Council of Europe and international human rights organizations regularly criticize Azerbaijan for serious violations of human rights. 

At the moment, there are more than 100 political prisoners, including journalists. Azerbaijani authorities deny that they have been convicted for political reasons.

Azerbaijan occupies 166th place out of 179 in the global freedom of speech index.
