Authorities in Dagestan capital call to stop “unauthorized shooting” of stray dogs

Mayor`s office of Makhachkala called upon the residents to stop “illegal extermination of stray animals”. It followed the numerous cases of goghunting aiming the stray dogs in recent days.
The mayor`s office officially stated it has nothing to do with the incidents and did not issue any permissions to kill dogs, as “it is not in the competence of the mayor` office and contradicts the Russian laws”.
The authorities reminded, that unauthorized shooting of dogs is qualified as “ill treatment of animals” by the Russian criminal code.
On February 19 the body of a 9-year old girl was found on the outskirts of Makhachkala, presumed to die of the dogs bites. The actual reason of death has not yet been established by the experts. The incident provoked a wave of dog killings, hundreds falling victims. That caused an uproar among animal rights activists and part of the Russian society.
