Heavy rain in Tbilisi
Following heavy rainfall overnight on 14 August, the Georgian capital was once again flooded. Tbilisi City Hall issued a statement on the situation, saying the intense rainfall had “caused certain problems”.
According to the city authorities, central districts were the worst affected. Private homes and basements were flooded, while a retaining wall at one residential property collapsed. Streets across the city and areas around several metro stations were also inundated.
Throughout the night, residents posted videos from different parts of the capital showing flooded streets and squares. Residents of one street in the city centre also blocked the road, calling for help in dealing with the damage.

“The heavy rainfall in the capital caused problems in all ten districts. Gravel and stones were washed onto roads. Our staff are carrying out clean-up work around the clock. The rain was particularly heavy in the Vake, Mtatsminda and Krtsanisi districts.
“More than 500 personnel and 30 pieces of equipment have been mobilised across all affected areas and are involved in the clean-up operation. The work will continue until all the problems have been fully resolved,” said Giorgi Papava, head of Tbilisi’s main municipal services operator, Tbilservice Group.
