The Ministry of Emergency Situations of Armenia has released official data on suicides committed in Armenia in 2016. The suicide rate increased by 2 cases as compared with 2015 and by 42 – as against 2014.
160 out of the total 197 suicides reported in Armenia were committed by men. The suicide rate among women also increased last year.

The available official data allow portraying an average suicider in Armenia. It’s a man above 60, who decided to commit suicide by hanging himself in his apartment or mansion in Yerevan.
As Samvel Khudoyan, a psychologist, told Tert.am, Armenia is a country with the lowest suicide rate, which is due to the strong friendly and family ties between the people.
At the same time, suicide cases are more frequent in the cities rather than in rural areas, since people in the cities are more isolated and interpersonal relations are not that strong.
The psychologist pointed out that a decision to commit suicide isn’t made in a day or two. People usually thoroughly weigh and plan this move.
Suicides are mostly committed against the background of a grievous emotional condition, depression. People thus try to ‘escape’ the problems. Experts claim, people who resort to such a move are experiencing psychological disorder.
In the experts’ opinion, women commit suicide less frequently, because mothers, as a rule, try to protect their children against such a tragedy. Moreover, women are usually more flexible and easily overcome difficult situations.
