Montenegro seeks to become a member of NATO within the next 2 months.
‘The next NATO summit will be held in Brussels in May 2017. Montenegro expects all members of the Alliance to ratify membership of this Balkan state by that time,’ Srdjan Darmanovic, the foreign minister of Montenegro reported.
27 out of 28 NATO member-states have already ratified Montenegro’s accession to the Alliance. Spain is the only country left. The USA’s confirmation was required and the U.S. Senate endorsed a relevant resolution supporting Montenegro’s membership in NATO.
According to Srdjan Darmanovic, Russia has been seeking to thwart a process of country accession to the Alliance.
Earlier, there were media reports that the UK and the USA had evidence of Russia’s involvement in a failed coup attempt in Montenegro.
The UK Foreign Office has officially claimed that Russian nationals were behind the Montenegro coup plot. However, it hasn’t confirmed their possible links with the Kremlin.
As reported, Montenegro authorities have put 2 Russian nationals, suspected of orchestrating a military coup in the country, on Interpol’s wanted list.
