The Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE) commented on the Georgian Prosecutor’s Office announcement of new criminal proceedings against pro-Western opposition figures, saying that the Georgian Dream government is steering the country toward full autocracy and that the world must not remain silent.
“Suppressing opposition voices, prosecuting democratic leaders for ‘crimes against the state’… The Georgian Dream government is steering Georgia towards full autocracy, and the world must not remain silent.
Democracy in the country is under full-scale attack. European liberals express their firm solidarity with everyone fighting for freedom, democracy and human rights in Georgia,” ALDE wrote on X.
Currently in Georgia, several pro-Western opposition leaders — Mikheil Saakashvili, Giorgi Vashadze, Nika Gvaramia, Nikanor Melia, Zurab “Girchi” Japaridze, Elene Khoshtaria, Mamuka Khazaradze, and Badri Japaridze — are facing criminal prosecution.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office, the cases have been opened on charges including sabotage, aiding and inciting hostile activities against a foreign state, financing actions aimed at undermining Georgia’s constitutional order and national security, as well as calling for the violent overthrow of the government.
