The Abkhasian writer Fazil Iskander died at his summer house in Peredelkino near Moscow at the age of 87.
Fazil Iskander wrote poetry and prose including satire, with works such as “The Kozlotur constellation, “Rabbits and boas, “The thirteenth Heracles’s feat, “Sandro from Chegem. The writer was awarded the highest Abkhasian award “Honour and Glory (1st grade).
After the 2008 war Fazil Iskander supported the recognition of Abkhasia by Russia. At the same time he struggled to prevent escalation of the conflict and “change the mentality of the citizens of Abkhasia for the sake of a peaceful effort, as any nation should do.
Fazil Iskander will be buried at the Novodevichye cemetery in Moscow.
Ibragim Chkadua, the Abkhasian film director, shot two documentaries about Fazil Iskander (2004, 2014) that now have become homages to the unique writer.
