Couple attempts double suicide on Baku boulevard
A young Azerbaijani couple tried drowning themselves in the sea on the boulevard in Baku.
The girl drowned but the boy was saved by rescuers. According to preliminary data, the couple decided to commit suicide because their relatives did not allow them to get married.
22-year-old Nazakyat Rzazade and 25-year-old Balahuseyn Mammadov lived in a village in central Azerbaijan. They came to Baku specifically to jump into the sea, 1news says.
The girl jumped first, the boy tried to save her, but could not. Rescuers themselves pulled him out.
Azerbaijani society is mostly conservative and patriarchal. In many families it is customary to get married only with the consent of the parents. Therefore, suicides on this basis often happen.
