Largest school in Abkhazia engulfed in fire
Pushkin School No. 2 in Sukhum, one of the largest schools in Abkhazia, was engulfed by an enormous fire earlier today.
The roof has completely burned out, and now more than a thousand schoolchildren will have to finish the school year elsewhere.
There were no injuries reported during the fire.
The fire started early in the morning, around 6 o’clock. The fire alarm did not work, and therefore the firefighters arrived with some delay. Time was also lost on turning off the trolleybus line, said the Minister of Emergency Situations Lev Kvitsinia.
It took about 10 fire brigades to extinguish the fire over the course of 2.5 hours. The cause of the fire is not yet known.
Sukhum school number 2 is considered an elite school in Abkhazia. The building burned down completely during the Georgian-Abkhaz conflict in the 1990s and was restored with funds allocated by Moscow in 2008.
