Two opposition MPs from pro-Kurdish party arrested in Turkey

Two members of the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP) have been arrested in Turkey.

Deputy Meral Danış Beştaş was arrested as part of a terror probe in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır on charges of ‘being a member of an armed terrorist organization’, Anadolu news agency reports.

The same charges have been brought against the other arrested MP, Ayhan Bilgen of HDP.

Some 13 HDP lawmakers were detained in November 2016, and 10 of them, including co-leaders Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ, were arrested pending trial on terrorism-related charges.

People’s Democratic Party’s is the third largest faction of the Turkish parliament. Last May, the parliament passed a law stripping MPs’ immunity from prosecution.
