Nauru to lose US funding for recognition of Abkhazia and South Ossetia

Nauru, a country located north of Australia, having recognized the independence of the occupied regions of Georgia back in 2009, will no longer be eligible to receive US funding, according to a report released by a local New Zealand media outlet radionz.co.nz.

The reason for that is a law adopted in the United States, which supports Georgia’s territorial integrity. According to the document, no country can receive funding from the United States if it recognizes the independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied by Russia, or establishes diplomatic ties with them independently of Georgia.

Nauru will be denied aid from the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the United Nations Foundation which receive financial assistance from the US.

The independence of Abkhazia and South Ossetia was also recognized by Tuvalu and Vanuatu, but unlike Nauru, they renounced the recognition in 2014.
