The decision to declare the city of Goris the Commonwealth capital in 2018 was adopted at the meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the CIS in Tashkent on April 7.
In connection with this, festive events will be held in Goris, during which the city will be officially awarded the certificate for the honoured title of the cultural capital of the CIS.
The Interstate Program “Cultural Capitals” is aimed at stimulating cultural dialogue between the CIS countries and uniting their potential in this area. It is called upon to identify the creative resources available outside the capitals and to strengthen the cultural cooperation between people of the CIS.
The program is financed on the principle of co-financing with the funds of the Interstate Humanitarian Cooperation Fund, the Government of the Commonwealth and City Hall, that has received the status of cultural capital.
During the entire year of 2013 within the framework of the “Gyumri-cultural capital of the CIS” program, about 45 events were held: international festivals of theaters, including performances on streets, performing arts, retrospective screening of films of the former USSR countries with participation of Mher Mkrtchyan “Following the tracks of Frunzik Mkrtchyan”, various exhibitions, scientific and practical conferences, etc.
