Russian ambassador assassinated in Turkey
Russian Ambassador to Turkey, AndreyKarlov, was attacked in Turkey’s capital, Ankara. The incident happened at the opening ceremony of a photoexhibition in the artsmuseum. As the Ambassador was delivering a speech, a man shouted: ‘Allah Akbar! Innocent people are killed in Syria and you will die here’! Then he started shooting. He made 7-8 gunshots and also smashed a couple of photos.
AndreyKarlov, 62, was taken to hospital, where he eventually died.
The gunman was shot dead by the Turkish special service officers. There is no true and comprehensive information with regard to his identity so far. He passed himself off as the Turkish special service officer. According to some reports, he was a police career officer.
The incident occurred the day before the Syrian Foreign Minister’s visit to Moscow, where he was expected to discuss the situation in Syria jointly with his Russian and Iranian colleagues. The negotiations haven’t been thwarted yet.
The killed Russian Ambassador had been engaged in talks on evacuation of East Aleppo and after the incident with downing the Russian bomber jet had been actively participating in settlement of the Russian-Turkish relations.
