PM of Georgia: number of coronavirus infections will drop in October
The peak of the coronavirus infections in Georgia will pass in October the situation will stabilize, said Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili. According to him, he decisive factor in achieving this will be the rapid pace of vaccination.
“Very soon at least one million people will be vaccinated in the country. Our goal is to vaccinate 2 million people with at least one dose of the vaccine by the end of September”, Garibashvili said.
This forecast was also confirmed by the Deputy Minister of Health Tamar Gabunia:
“The main question right now is how quickly the decrease in the number of daily infections will occur. For this, it is extremely important to comply with the existing preventive measures”.
In Georgia, an average of 5,000-6,000 people get infected with coronavirus every day, and the mortality rate remains alarmingly high, with approximately 70 people dying of Covid-19 every day.
Gabunia said that “the country is yet to go through a very serious period” as high mortality rate is likely to persist for another two weeks. Usually, within this period, the stabilization of the number of infected people is followed by a decrease in the mortality rate.
In recent months, up to 6,000 cases of coronavirus infection and up to 80 deaths have been registered in Georgia every day. Over the past 24 hours, 78 people have died in the country and new 1,915 cases of infection have been registered.
At a briefing on August 18, Deputy Health Minister Tamar Gabunia said infection rates are still high and there are no signs of stabilization in any regions of Georgia.
