China is giving Armenia 1,000 free kits to test for coronavirus, the Chinese embassy announced on March 6 during a meeting with the Armenian Minister of Health.
In addition, the embassy is providing financial assistance to buy treatment medication.
So far, only one person in Armenia has been infected with the coronavirus; the individual entered the country from Iran.
The 29-year-old Armenian citizen and more than 30 others who came into contact with him are in quarantine. All of them feel healthy and will return home in eight days, after the quarantine period ends.
After the first case of coronavirus was confirmed, a temporary visa regime was introduced with neighboring Iran. The border is still open between Armenia and Georgia, where there are now 15 confirmed coronavirus cases. This is now the only land road connecting Armenia to the outside world, and therefore must remain open. Classes in all educational institutions have been canceled since March 2.
The initial panic in the country has abated and the situation is relatively peaceful. This is in large part due to the assessment of international experts, who declared Armenia a “green zone” for epidemic prevention. Because of this, many jokes and memes are circulating on social media, suggesting that Armenia should help China and other countries in the fight against coronavirus.
