Azerbaijan’s largest HPP resumes operation after major overhaul
Mingachevir, Azerbaijan’s largest hydro-power plant, resumed operating on 27 February after a seven-year major overhaul. The Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev participated in the renovated HPP’s launch ceremony.
After reconstruction the power generating capacity of the plant increased from 284 to 424MW – 1.5 times. Unserviceable turbines and generators were replaced during the renovations. The plant currently employs 130 people.
The construction of the plant lasted for nine years and was put into operation in 1954. In Azerbaijani mass media it is referred to as the largest power plant in the South Caucasus, though it is trails behind the Inguri hydro-power plant in Georgia in some aspects.
