The Armenian government has agreed to the Moon Treaty (also known as the Agreement on Governing the Activities of States on the Moon and Other Celestial Bodies), which was a resolution adopted by the General Assembly in New York back 18 December, 1979.
“Armenia should use the moon and other celestial bodies exclusively for peaceful purposes, with the aim to improve living standards, as well as to promote economic and social development. In order to use resources from outer space, including the Moon and other celestial bodies, Armenia will ratify the agreement…,” reads the adopted document.
Although the agreement was approved without any discussions, the project substantiation includes a provision that gives an insight into its essence: “Any threat or use of force or any other hostile act or threat of hostile act on the moon is prohibited. The establishment of military bases, installations and fortifications, the testing of any type of weapons and the conduct of military maneuvers on the moon shall be forbidden.”
Under the aforesaid agreement, “The Moon is not subject to national appropriation by any claim of sovereignty, by means of use or occupation, or by any other means.”
Not only has the aforesaid report drawn the Armenian Facebook users’ attention, but they couldn’t help commenting on it. Here are some of those comments:
“How terrible! Where are we supposed to deploy our military bases now!?”
“We don’t need the Moon, our military bases will be stationed on the Sun!”
“Armenia is allowed to hold a BBQ festival on the Moon.”
“Great! It was the only problem left and we’ve solved it!”
