Nikol Pashinyan, an Armenian MP from the Yelk opposition party has come across a statue of the Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin in the National Assembly. He posted a photograph of the statue on his personal Facebook page.
“I just saw this in the National Assembly. It was probably brought here to be presented in the National Assembly later in April. The beginning of the election campaign of the last Bolshevik… ,” Pashinyan commented on his photo.
In April 2018, a new prime minister will be elected in parliament. According to constitutional changes, the candidate will perform the functions of the head of state.[/notification]
Arsen Babayan, the Press Secretary for public relations of the National Assembly said that this statue has been in the parliamentary building since Soviet times.
“They simply decided to transfer it to the archive of unused items now,” he said.
According to him, the fate of the statue will definitively be decided upon when the assembly addresses the issue.
