Hurricane force winds in the south-western region of Azerbaijan which began on the evening of 30 October, have left about one hundred villages in the Lerik and Lenkoran regions without electricity. Twelve villages were completely cut off from the district centers.
The storm winds uprooted trees, piling them on powerlines, demolishing roofs of buildings, and causing considerable damage to orchards.
Residents of local villages suffered serious injuries from falling trees. Two of them from Lenkoran were placed in the Intensive Care Unit at a local hospital.
‘Snow in some places reached a depth of one meter. As a result, 12 villages in the Lerik region were cut off from the district center,’ the deputy head of the Lerik region executive authorities, Habil Melikov, reported to the Trend agency.
The storm also affected the neighboring region of Masalli where about 40 villages remain without electricity.
According to Tanriverdi Mustafayev, the spokesman of the Azerishig agency, everything is being done to restore electrical service to the affected villages despite the bad weather conditions.
