18 people found guilty of religious extremism and other offences in Azerbaijan

Taleh Bagirzade, the ‘Muslim Unity’ leader, who was charged with premeditated murder and some other offences [6 people were killed in the special services’ operation conducted following the riot in Nardaran settlement], has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by Baku Court of Grave Crimes – Radio Liberty reports. Deputy leader of the Azerbaijani Popular front Party (APFP), Fuad Gahramanly, has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment. The rest 16 individuals, who were also involved in the case, have been sentenced to 14,17 and 19 years in prison.

The convicted persons plead not guilty. APFP leader, Ali Kerimli, claims, their guilt has not been proved.

•According to the human right activists, 78 people have been targeted in the investigation over Nardaran case.
•The law-enforcers conducted a special operation in Taleh Bagirzade’s house on November 26, 2015. He and his fellow members from the ‘Muslim Unity’ were suspected of religious extremism and preparation of an armed coup.
•6 people, including 2 police officers, were killed in a firefight during the special operation.
